Our Story
Family-owned,
New Zealand-made, and always evolving. A team that thinks like makers, builds like engineers, and collaborates like partners.
Our story began in the mid-80s with a small Kiwi business crafting steel gates and pool fencing – the origins of Urban Group. In the ’90’s, we shifted to aluminium for its durability, precision and design flexibility, and moved into commercial fabrication, delivering projects that required greater scale, speed and architectural finish.
In 2011, we expanded with a purpose-built factory and powder-coating plant in the North Island and grew our team to include designers and project managers, giving us full end-to-end capability.
To focus on construction at scale, we launched Belcanto in 2019. Led by third-generation family member and Director William Stewart, we secured exclusive rights to the Patented Glide-On®balcony system developed by Sapphire Balconies in the UK.
We’ve refined the system for the Australasian market – and branded it as ? Grappler Balconies – and integrated it with own Attaché aluminium balustrade and screen systems.

A modern production line, backed by a skilled team
Belcanto has developed a well-designed process built for scale and precision. At the centre is our Levin manufacturing plant – purpose-built for large-format aluminium fabrication and assembly, with workflows designed to maintain quality and exacting tolerances.
Our team spans engineering, architecture, fabrication, logistics and installation, working across our factory and Auckland head office. We have digitally modelled and pre-resolved every component, with parametric 3D modelling driving direct-to-machine fabrication.
We pre assemble every element with a robust, well-managed supply chain. Site installation is fast and repeatable – up to 25 balconies a day (is this to specific? Only speaks to balconies)– giving main contractors control and certainty on installation dates.

Our clients and partners
At Metlifecare Gulf Rise, Belcanto fixed 12 balcony units in a single day. The system allows us to complete the facade sooner, bringing down the scaffolding up to a month earlier, which accelerates work on adjacent civil and landscaping projects. It’s refreshing when something just works as planned, without any issues.
We’ve now used the Grappler system on three buildings for Metlifecare. Our client saw the value in how it reduced risk to the envelope design while delivering significant speed and cost savings. It’s proven to be a real success.
